A Psalm to share

This is my brother-in-law, Mark Sharpe, singing, Surely Goodness and Mercy, at his church, Emory Pike American Christian. He is the song leader there. I think he does an outstanding job. The words of this song are so great. Of course they are from the 23rd Psalm, where David declares: "Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever."

The Comforter Abides

Last Sunday I was honored to preach at Emory Pike American Christian church. I had an appointment to preach there since June 15th. I really struggled with the perfect message to bring. I prayed from the moment I was invited until the moment I stepped behind the podium in the pulpit. The Sunday morning I was to preach, I woke up very early feeling so discouraged. I guess it was the devil trying to mess with me. He was making me doubt my ability to stand and preach the Word. It kept running through my head, "you are going to be a miserable failure today." As I studied and prayed, a song starting going around in my head, "The God Of All Comfort."

1. When angry storms around me rage, and life's greatest trials I must face. My ship is tossed seems all would be lost. Then the God of all Comfort, speaks peace to my soul.

Chorus: When the God of all comfort, speaks peace to my soul. The seas are calmed, the winds cease to blow. No matter how dark may be the night, everything will be alright. When the God of all Comfort speaks peace to my soul.

2. When a broken heart, leaves me hurting inside, and like rain my tears fall through the night. His voice I hear, there's not reason to fear. When the God of all comfort speaks peace to my soul.

That song is on a CD that my sister Jennifer gave me a couple of years ago, of the New Manna Youth Choir. I guess I've listened to it a thousand times but that particular song had never spoke to me like it did that morning. I kept praying for the God of all Comfort to come to me. I prayed and said, "Lord, it is only through you that I'll be able to stand and preach today. I am asking for your comfort," and I left it at that.

When we arrived at Emory Pike, as soon as I stepped in the front door I could feel God's presence. I was still nervous but kept praying for the Comforter. I joined in the choir singing and they sang a song that I haven't sang in years, page 184 in the Church Hymnal, He Abides. All four of the verses end, speaking of the Comforter:

1. Yes, the secret all is this: That the Comforter abides with me.
2. And there came a peace so sweet, Now that the Comforter abides with me.
3. Jesus satisfies my soul, Since the Comforter abides with me.
4. All my burdens rolled away, Now the Comforter abides with me.

I only made it through the first verse of the song before breaking down and crying. I could feel the Comforter, so strongly that it was if He was holding me in His embrace.

Later, as I stood behind the pulpit to bring the message, I read from John 14 where Jesus speaks of the Comforter:

"15 If ye love me, keep my commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever; 17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. 18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you."

Oh how that passage of Scripture gave me comfort and peace. Our God is so marvelous and wonderful. We don't deserve one single blessing that He gives us, but he gives them to us anyway. Can you imagine having as much love as Jesus has? I pray that God would give me just a portion of that much love for others. I am so thankful for the Comforter.

When we all pull together, how happy we'll be!

It's been a while since I've posted on here so I thought I'd catch everyone up with what's going on right now.

As I am typing this, it is 1:05 AM on Tuesday night/Wednesday morning. I've been studying for the past 6 hours. I'm nearly finished with my first Seminary course, Advanced Old Testament. I've only got 6 more assignments to complete in my notebook and 3 Family Devotional guides to complete and I'll be finished with this semester. That will be one down and 9 more to go! I am really enjoying my course work and it is really helping me with my ministry. I'm looking forward to this next course, Advanced New Testament! Please pray that God will supply the finances needed for me to continue on. I'm going to take a month off in between courses so that gives me a little bit of time to save up. That means I'll be starting back up in September.

We haven't practiced much in the choir lately. I canceled practice again this past Sunday because of Independence day. I really needed a break. I may cancel this coming Sunday as well because I am going to be preaching at Emory Pike American Christian church on Sunday morning and then going to my in-law's house for lunch. I don't want to have to try and rush around to make it by 5:00. I'd really like to take Sunday evening off from my church and go visit Rutledge Pike Baptist because Rev. Charlie Lynch is going to be preaching there both services this Sunday and I'd like to go hear him.

Speaking of preaching, the Lord finally gave me a message that wasn't all gloom and doom last Wednesday evening. I brought a message about Gideon and how we as Christians needed to step up and blow the horn for God. I probably shouldn't have went back and listened to myself because I found several mistakes. I had the course of events wrong in one part and I completely left out Gideon's first sign from God. I probably shouldn't keep beating myself up over it but it just irritates me to mess up like that when I know something like the back of my hand. Oh well, it wasn't my first mistake and I'm sure it won't be my last.

The Southern Gospel Trio, HisVoice, will be singing at Highland next Sunday morning, July 19th. I'm looking forward to hearing them again. I just hope our members come out and support the church. It is really frustrating when people are always asking me to get more groups and special singers and then they don't show up when they come. I only have 3 groups scheduled for the rest of 2009 and I'm not planning on asking any more. I've already turned down at least 6 requests from different groups and soloist over the past 2 months. It's just way too much work for me and not enough support. Sorry, that's just my little rant for the day... I should probably get some sleep!

My sister, Jennifer (who is going to kill me when she sees the pictures I've posted of her on this post!) has been in town this week and I've really enjoyed that. Her husband, Jon, preached at our church this past Sunday evening. His sermon was titled, "Lord, if..." I always love to hear him preach. Jennifer also sang and played the piano. I have to constantly fight back tears every time I hear her sing. The Lord really uses her talents for His glory. I wish they didn't live so far away, they would be so great for our church... but I'm just dreaming I reckon.

Chester and Robert are going to be wondering who's been messing around in the sound booth! I learned how to use the DVD recorder at church last night. Mom needed to make a soundtrack of Jennifer playing so we went to the church and I figured out how to do it. I'm really happy about that because I've needed to learn how to do that for the past 3-years. I am going to get Barbara and my nephew Jared to play the piano for me on some soundtracks that I want to sing with and now I know how to record it!
Well, I've got to get off of this computer and get some sleep. I have to get up in about 6 hours and go to work and then there is Wednesday night church after that. Cya later!

I'm so glad I'm a part of...

The Family of God!

This week at Emory Pike American Christian church where my brother-n-law (and lifetime best friend) is the pastor, they are having revival. I've only been able to attend one night thus far, Tuesday night. The Rev. Boyd Myers is doing the preaching and doing a wonderful job of that. As I sat on the pew Tuesday night and looked around the congregation, I couldn't help but notice nearly half of everyone in there was related to me. There was my mother and father-n-law, Harry and Helen, my sister and brother-n-law, Sandra and Wayne, my sister and brother-n-law, Kevin and Martha along with their children, Nathan and Jared, my sister and brother-n-law, Mark and Susan with their son, Ryan, and my son Matthew. All except for my son, are related to me by marriage. Then I got to thinking, you know, everyone else in the church that has accepted Christ as their Saviour, is also related to me by marriage, they married into the family of God! It makes me think of that Bill Gaither song that we sometimes sing in the choir; The Family of God:

"I'm so glad I'm a part of the Family of God, I've been washed in the fountain, cleansed by His Blood! Joint heirs with Jesus as we travel this sod, For I'm part of the family, The Family of God."

I see so many times in church where there are divisions among the people. One group won't associate with the other or they hold grudges against one another. I see people with huge chips no their shoulders just looking for some reason to get "hurt" by somebody and to "hurt" them right back. One itty bitty thing doesn't go their way and they are ready to just sull up and cry like a baby. The worst part is those types of people get on the telephone and start calling up anyone that will listen and infect them with their misery. "Oh poor me, old brother so-n-so said this about me or he didnt' shake my hand or he didn't do this or do that." You can see it in their eyes when you look at them. They sit in their pew and smile and put on this big show of "righteousness" and then as soon as you walk past the smile leaves and they spend the rest of the time wondering how they can dig the knife into you. I've seen churches split, friendships ended, and crimes committed all because of some "hurt" church member. My friend it ought not to be so, because in 1 John 4:20-21 the Bible says:

"20 If a man say, I love God, and hateth his brother, he is a liar: for he that loveth not his brother whom he hath seen, how can he love God whom he hath not seen? 21 And this commandment have we from him, That he who loveth God love his brother also."

That is pretty clear to me, how about you? We can't just pick and choose the commandments from the Bible that want to follow. If we believe one of them, we have to believe them all. I think we all need to make a new commitment to love one another as much as we do ourselves. If everyone would just follow that one simple commandment from God's Word we wouldn't have so much misery and heartache in this life. There would be no wars, no crime, no hatred, it would be paradise!

Praise God there is a day coming when we won't have to worry about all of the stuff going on down here. If we are truly saved and have trusted Jesus, we will be spending eternity in Heaven with Him. No more chips on the shoulders, no more whispering, no more gossiping, no more finger pointing, no more divisions, all of that stuff will die with us and be left for Satan and his crowd. Which is where it should be left today, and not amongst God's people.

So, next time you sing that song, The Family of God, think about this little post and ask yourself if you really mean what you are singing about. Be honest with yourself. You might as well be because God already knows the depths of your heart. Why not get on your knees and ask God to give you love for your fellow man? Turn things over to Him. He's the only one that can fix it for you.
