An anniversary fit for a Triumphant Kingsmen!

My wife and I are celebrating our 24th wedding anniversary next Sunday, March 15th. Some folks dream of going to far away exotic places and eating at fancy restaurants. Well, whatever floats your boat I reckon. I could care less about that sort of thing. I can't think of a better place to spend our anniversary than at the 5th annual SGM FanFair in Pigeon Forge!

Yes Southern Gospel music lovers, the 2-finest quartets in all of SGM are coming to Pigeon Forge, TN on Monday, March 16th, to participate in the 5th annual SGM FanFair; The Kingsmen, and Triumphant Quartet!!! It's no secret that the Mighty Kingsmen Quartet is my favorite quartet of all time. And, of course, my second favorite quartet of all time is Triumphant Quartet. Wow, Ray Dean Reese, Eric Bennett, and myself, all in one place on the same night! I'm excited just thinking about it! I'm hoping to be able to take a vacation day off from work on that Monday and spend all day long at the FanFair.

Not only are the Kingsmen and Triumphant going to be there but so are Gold City, and Michael & Delilah Kitts! Here is the entire scheduled lineup for Monday: Darlene Chapman, Gold City, Goodwins, Jeff Treece Band, Kingsmen, Lauren King, Mattingly Family, Melody Trio, Michael & Delilah, Mike Southerland, Rod Burton, Samaritans, Susan Ketron, Tim Parton, Triumphant Quartet, Yielded Ministries. See the entire week's schedule HERE.

I'd sure like to be able to attend on Friday as well because more of my favorites will be there; the Dixie Echoes, Dixie Melody Boys, Jeff & Sheri Easter, and the awesome Tony Gore & Majesty!!! I seriously doubt I'll be able to take off 2-days from work that week though so I won't be able to be there. Hmmm, maybe I can leave a little early and make it to Pigeon Forge in time for the concerts though! I'll have to see...

Southern Gospel Music FanFair is March 16 - March 21, 2009 at the Smoky Mountain Convention Center in Pigeon Forge, TN. Directions HERE.

Remembering Won by One

This Knoxville based group started out as a trio. In August of 1994, Tenor-Greg Shockley, Lead-Clayton Inman, and Baritone-David Jenkins, made their debut appearance as 'Won by One.' The next year they won the coveted, Singing News Horizon Group Award for 1995. They continued on as a trio for the next 4-years, delighting Southern Gospel fans of all ages. Then, in 1999, they smartly added Bass singer, Bob Caldwell, and rose to the ranks of one of the greatest quartets of the day.

The Singing News cover on the left, was from August 1999. In that issue they were booked solid all across the United States. Singing in Hueytown, AL to Lake Charles, LA and everywhere in between. Their number one (June 1999) smash hit single, 'King Jesus,' was sitting in the 10th spot on the Top 80 Chart. They quickly followed up with another hit song, 'Dead Man Walking,' which was written by David Jenkins. It looked like there was no stopping this awesome quartet.

The article from the Singing News had the following statement; "As they step into the future with great anticipation, Won By One has one common goal: they want to remain in the center of God's will as they continue and unmistakable sound of seamless harmony that has stood strong for five years, without so much as even a membership change."

Sadly, that didn't last very long. A year later, Greg Shockley left the group and was replaced by Nic Holland. Two year's later, Bob Caldwell and Clayton Inman left the group to pursue other opportunities. Inman went on to join his buddy, Eric Bennett, former bass with the Kingdom Heirs, to form a new group called, 'Integrity Quartet,' which was later changed to 'Triumphant Quartet.' Caldwell spent more time at home and did some bus driving work for the popular Morristown, TN trio, Greater Vision. He also made a few guest appearances with various groups. To my knowledge, he isn't singing with anyone as of this writing.

Won by One continued on as a Trio for 2 more years, changing out the Tenor position a couple of times and a new lead, Chris Whitaker. They never did achieve the success that they once had, and in 2004 they disbanded. Founding member, David Jenkins, lasted throughout the entire history of the group and in July 2005 went on to sing baritone for a trio out of Dayton Ohio, called 'New Life.' I'm not sure what he is doing currently.

I would love to see the group name, Won by One, be used again. Maybe Greg and David could resurrect it! Probably just wishful thinking...

Triumphant Quartet Caught On Tape!

I just recently discovered Southern Gospel Tube. Just as the name implies, it is an alternative to YouTube, only it is for Southern Gospel music videos! This is the most awesome site that I have ran across in a long, long time! Tons of old and new videos of some of my very favorite SG groups, including, the Kingsmen, Inspirations, Happy Goodmans, Cathedrals and the list goes on and on. I even found the excellent video below of Triumphant Quartet doing 'Don't Let the Sandals Fool Ya.'

Special Microphones for Bass Singers???

I posted this information over on my King's Servants Quartet site a couple of years ago, and I get tons of hits from folks asking the question "are there special microphones for bass singers?" In a nut shell the answer is...well... yes and no.

Being a bass singer myself, I am always wanting to sound my best and have a smooth yet thundering bass sound. But, just as Jim Weatherford, bass for the group, EVIDENCE, says, "it's not the microphone that makes the bass singer, but good sound reinforcement and a relyable [sic] microphone sure helps a lot."

I've heard a lot of bass singers in my life, some good and some bad. A lot of folks refer to the late great J.D. Sumner as the best in the business, and he was great, however, I often found his growling just a tad overbearing. When he was singing standard bass notes his sound was pleasing but when he would throw that hand up to his ear, lean into the mic and start something akin to burping, it just turned me off. I would much rather hear a smooth, solid bass sound like Eric Bennet's, rather than someone trying to impress me with their belching skills, and judging from THIS post on iBelieve.com, I'm not the only one that feels that way.

So with that being said, read on:

Bass Microphones:

Ever wonder what type of microphones that bass singers use? Well being a bass singer myself I was curious to know what types of mics were being used so I did a little bit of research. Below are a few southern gospel bass singers and the microphones that they use. I will add more to the list as I hear back from them. If you are a bass singer and want to have your microphone listed here, send an e-mail and let us know!

Eric Bennett, Triumphant Quartet: "I use the same mic as all the other guys. Wireless, Shure 87. I like it to be clean where you can understand the words. Gospel music is all about the words so keep the mic clean. You may not be able to rattle the speakers but, they won't miss a word you say."

Tim Buffaloe, Four Fold Quartet: "Without question the best mic that we have found is the Sennheiser Wireless (with special order condenser head) I think the model is EM165 or 465"

Jeff Chapman, Kingdom Heirs: "I use a wireless "audio tech- t3300". You may want to try an "akg 535".

Burman Porter, Blackwood Gospel Quartet: "Burman uses a Shure Wireless SM 58"

Brad Meeks, Kindred Spirit: "I sing over the Shure Beta 87 Wireless, which is the same mic the other guys in my group use. I think with the right equipment, and ability to set eq's, a bass singer can sing on the same mic as the rest of the group. This is how so many of the "good" basses do it today. IMHO - If you are truly a well-versed bass vocalist, you should be able to sing over any microphone."

Jim Weatherford, EVIDENCE: "I've been around Southern Gospel Music for a long time and I've always used the microphone that J.D. Sumner actually used... A Shure SM-81. I'm also trying to get accustomed to using a "MXL" microphone [$99.00 at Guitar Center]. It does everything the Shure SM-81 will do at 1/4 the price. But I still like the SM-81, it is predictable and relyable.
I just want to be clear that it's not the microphone that makes the bass singer, but good sound reinforcement and a relyable microphone sure helps a lot."

Gerald Williams, Melody Boys Quartet: "Most bass singers don't like the mic I use. It is just a regular Sure SM 58. A lot of the guys want the condenser type mic and they are ok except that most basses use them wrong by over powering the other harmony parts and by doing so all you hear is a big roar of the bass part ruining the blend. The SM 58 has a hot spot in the exact center of the mic and this is what I work from."

David Hester, Dove Brothers Quartet: "David uses an AKG 81 just like the rest of the group. No special mic."

J.D. Sumner: It is widely reported that JD used a Shure SM 81 microphone

Kevin Mothershed, Christway Quartet: "As a quartet bass singer, I have used and still own a number of quality microphones. Those I still own are the Shure Beta 58, Shure SM 81, Electro Voice EV757, Sennheiser E865, and the wired (AE5400) and wireless(AEW5400) versions of the Audio Technica Artist Elite 5400 series. I, like Eric Bennett, prefer a clean sound over a boomy, muddy one. I'm currently using, with the rest of my quartet, the AT AEW5400. While having a good low end pickup, it doesn't sacrifice a clean sound. Of course, how a person sets up his p.a. system has a lot to do with the sound, as well. A good, clean sound is only as good as the weakest link in the p.a. system, whether that be the microphone, speakers, mixer or amp. Another factor to consider is the person's voice. Because virtually everyone's voice is different to some extent, there is no one microphone that's going to be "the best" for all vocals. But overall, I've found the AT 5400's to be very consistent across the vocal spectrum."

**Note** The above information was obtained in 2006/2007, some of the bass singers have went to other groups since it was written.
